One school. One question.
One answer that became a movement.

Sophie-Mae Hein, Founder

After witnessing, firsthand, the disparity between the resources available to children in her own community and those growing up just kilometers away Sophie-Mae asked herself a simple question: what more could be achieved if the people building that hope had adequate access to what we assume are basic rights?

In the middle of a desperate and poverty-ridden space, she found a small school that screamed of hope .

The answer became this project. Zonke Izingane exists to lever privilege as a tool — connecting communities of surplus with communities of need — and to ensure that geography and circumstance are never allowed to define the ceiling on a child’s life.

We operate under The Maletsatsi Foundation NPC, responding to community need wherever it presents itself: from classroom to street corner, from school gate to front door.

Seasonal drives

Seasonal & Needs-Based Drives

We respond to what communities actually need, when they need it. Seasonal drives — including our annual winter blanket distribution — put essential items into the hands of children and families navigating Johannesburg’s harshest months. No waiting list. No bureaucracy. Direct delivery.

Early years

ECD Support & Gift Boxes

We identify Early Childhood Development centres doing extraordinary work in under-resourced communities and bring them educational supplies, learning materials, and toys — recognising both the children they serve and the caregivers making the difference.

Basic dignity

Hygiene Pack Distributions

Basic hygiene is not a privilege. We pack and distribute hygiene essentials — including underwear, soap, toothbrushes, and skincare products — to primary school learners who lack access to what the rest of us take entirely for granted..

Grade R → Grade 1

Stationery & School Readiness

In partnership with corporate sponsors, we source and deliver stationery packs to Grade R learners heading into Grade 1 — ensuring that the first day of school is not defined by what a family cannot afford. Every child deserves an equitable start to their schooling career.

Bearing witness

Recognising Community Heroes

We believe in bearing witness. When we encounter individuals quietly changing their communities from within — with little resource and remarkable heart — we find ways to amplify and support what they’re already doing. Because kindness multiplies when it’s seen.

Birthday & Celebration Baskets

Every child deserves to know that their existence is worth celebrating. We distribute curated gift baskets — filled with warmth, food, and essentials — to children and families across Johannesburg, turning milestones into moments of shared joy.

Not a charity that waits for the right conditions

We respond to need as it presents itself — working with community leaders, social workers, schools, and teachers to understand what’s missing and find ways to fill those gaps. We are sustained by a community of people who believe, as we do, that the size of a problem is never a reason to do nothing.
