A Project of The Maletsatsi Foundation
Restoring Childhood
Through Safe Risk
Team Zonke is the sports and motorsport programme
of The Maletsatsi Foundation. Through structured,
evidence-informed off-road motorcycling, children who
have experienced trauma discover confidence,
resilience and a renewed sense of belonging.

Why We Do What We Do
Healing Happens Through Challenge
Many children in protective or alternative care carry invisible burdens. Trauma affects far more than emotions—it impacts confidence, decision-making, trust, focus and the ability to feel safe in their own bodies.
At Team Zonke, we believe traditional talk therapy is essential, but it is not always sufficient—the body keeps the score, and many trauma imprints are somatic.
Motorcycling provides the perfect environment for this. Every ride teaches children to assess risk, solve problems, stay calm under pressure and celebrate progress—skills that extend far beyond the track and into everyday life.
“Risky Things. Done Safely.”
Why MOTORSPORT?
More than a Motorcycle
Motorcycling—when safely taught and properly supervised—is an unusually
rich therapeutic canvas:
Confidence Through Mastery
Every skill learned reinforces the belief:
“I can do this.”
Emotional Regulation
Children learn to stay calm under pressure, recover from mistakes and regulate their emotions.
Belonging & Respect
Riding together teaches teamwork, healthy boundaries, respect and responsibility, creating a safe environment where every child belongs.
Life Skills
Riding develops focus, decision-making, responsibility and perseverance that transfer naturally into school, relationships and everyday life.

Our Approach
Safe. Structured.
Evidence-Based.
Everything Team Zonke does is grounded in internationally recognised research on risky play.
The understanding that children develop resilience, confidence and emotional regulation when they experience challenge in safe, supportive environments.
For many of the children in our care, trauma has taken away their sense of control and trust in themselves. Every decision they make on a motorcycle—whether to accelerate, slow down, attempt an obstacle or stop—is an opportunity to reclaim that autonomy. They learn that safety isn’t something done to them, but something they can actively create through good decisions.
This philosophy is brought to life through:
Qualified coaching with age-appropriate rider development
Trauma-informed mentoring built on choice, consent and encouragement
Comprehensive safeguarding protective equipment and medical readiness
Caregiver involvement to reinforce learning at home and school
Ongoing reflection and progress tracking to celebrate every milestone

The Difference We See
Building Children Who Believe in Themselves
The greatest success of Team Zonke isn’t measured by trophies.
It’s measured in children who begin to say:
“I can do this.”
Over time we see children who are more confident, emotionally resilient, focused in the classroom and connected to those around them. They develop healthier relationships, stronger self-belief and a positive identity built on achievement rather than adversity. Because every child deserves the opportunity to discover what they are capable of.
